Sharnika
Renee' Taylor
Sharnika is an average 13 year old who enjoys pizza, swimming, and
roller skating and going to Denny's for cappuchino. From time to time she
has her mood swings but what kid her age doesn't. The only difference with
Sharnika is that in May of 1994 she was diagnosed with having a Posterior
Brain Tumor,
which is a form of cancer called PNET.
Sharnika went through chemotherapy as well as radiation and other
treatments. With the help of God, her grandmother, and some very
special doctors, Sharnika has now been in remission for 61/2 years and is
off all medications.
Sharnika now wears a hearing aide in both ears simply because she has now
lost the high pitch in both ears. Sharnika will soon begin receiving
growth hormone shots simply because for a while her hormones were a little
off balance. The shots will be given to her on a daily basis for an
unknown time.
Sharnika is also one of the many kids who once every year attends two very
special camps. One is Camp Dream Street. The name practically
says it all.
Patty the owner of this camp had an idea and has brought sunshine to
thousands or maybe millions of kids. This camp is where a kid can really
be a
kid for 7 nights 8 days without the interference of parents. Not
only do the
kids with cancer and blood disorders get to attend this very special camp
but
they get to go with there doctors and nurses from there very own Miller
Children's Hospital.
The other camp is camp is called Camp Summersault. This camp is also
a week
long but the kids must return home daily. On the fourth day of camp
the kids put on a really nice show for there parents and doctors and at
the end of each sketch they make a wish. It is very fun for the kids
as well as the staff of the cancer society who sponsors this special camp.
Sharnika has lots of dreams but for now a kid is all she wants to
be.
