Akeemia
Ramsey
"It's Me"
Akeemia was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease as an infant. It was
the
tender age of 15 months that she suffered a stroke and began therapy that
would require her to receive blood transfusions monthly to help ward off
the
life threatening affects of sickle cell. Akeemia also had to receive
a
medication called Desferal which is used to prevent iron overload as a
result
of frequent blood transfusions.
frustration and fear is common when facing a lifetime of hospitalizations
and
medical hardships, especially for one so young as Akeemia. Throughout
it all
she has remained courageous, and is determined to leas a "normal
life" and
comply with her therapy.
Akeemia has starred in many educational videos and is a wonderful role model
something that draws the attention of everyone. This sweet dimpled
cheeked
baby has blossomed into a strong, happy, polite, and "Normal" 12
year old
young lady. She is in the 7th grade and her favorite subject is
math. (She
is good at it too).
Akeemia has been an inspiration to her family as well as both patients and
staff, by her acceptance of therapy. She intends to remain healthy and
motivated. She continues to maintain her home life, school life, and
that
contagious smile of hers.
Akeemia recently got together with another patient Comille Begnaud who
also
has the same thing as his friend Akeemia, and together they did a song
which
is titled "Are You My Friend". Akeemia will be featured on
Comille's album
performing this song as well as having her picture on the cover of the CD.
Akeemia's dream is to grow up and become a nurse. will her strong
will and
determination we all know she will succeed at whatever she chooses to do
in
life.
Look for more on Akeemia coming soon.
